During the early stages of planning your wedding, you will need to decide on a theme. If you don’t want a boring wedding and you want to do something different, the theme is so important because it will dictate so many of the other details about your big day. A lot of people think that they just decide on a theme and everything else comes after, but that’s not the way to do it. It’s important that you choose a theme that you like, but you also have to make sure that all of the other details fit with the theme, especially if it’s a bit out of the ordinary. So you have to think about that while you are making your decision. These are the things that you need to consider when deciding on a theme for a non-traditional wedding.

A Retro Beetles Wedding
Rebellious Couple Glazel and Archie have the cutest story. They met at a Volkswagen store. And the rest you could say, is history. Inspired by this serendipitous moment, their wedding theme revolved around the VW and the retro vibe. But that was not the only thing that made the bride rebellious - she sang her vows and she wore a bridal gown rental. Not to be outdone though, the groom was not your usual groom because he was hands-on and got involved with a lot of the logistics when it comes to having all the Beetles make its way all the way to Baguio. Oh to be brave and creative!

Proudly Filipino
When it comes to conceptualizing weddings, many adopt what they see from abroad. There's nothing wrong if you want a foreign-themed wedding, of course. Most specially if a certain country or theme has sentimental value. But sometimes, you just have to look around you to realize that 1) It's more fun in the Philippines 2) We have a rich culture as inspiration.
And because, we're rebellious, we take inspirations from not just weddings but also 2nd birthdays! Yes, Mio is just 2 and his birthday rocked. It was so Filipino and it reminded a lot of us of how it was in the good old days sans iPads and other gadgets. When fun meant playing outside with a kite made of newspaper or hitting those cans with our slippers or grabbing goodies from a bamboo grid. You guys, yes I am talking those our age, you'll definitely reminisce your childhood when you see the photos.
The whole set-up was styled by Mio's mom Jaws and her good friend Vicky. It was conceptualized intelligently as elements were neatly tied together instead of just adopting a haphazard barrio fiesta. Using minimal colors and design elements like banig (a handwoven mat popular in our country),capiz shells (or windowpane oysters that are widely used in the provinces of the Philippines), national symbols and wooden toys, the whole look was very thematic yet stylish. One of my favorites is the capiz shell-designed cake with a jeepney on top. Even the food served were from our favorite Filipino merienda (mid-afternoon snack)! Yummy!

Return to Opulence: A 1920s Wedding
Being both from advertising agencies, Kitty and Vince have a keen eye for beauty. Hence, it was all about glitz and glamour. It was a wedding where you excitedly realise you can wear your silk gloves and not look overdressed. In fact, the point was to wear your best pearls and fascinating fascinators!
Just like the good old times.
REBELations: Pastel Goth
I remember way back in high school when Goth was perceived to be devil worship + blood suckers + all things black. We had a group headed by the Queen of the Damned and I was aptly named DIVAmpyre. Must have been from reading too much Anne Rice novels. BUT I grew up and started liking PURPLE. Yes. Not very DIVAmpyre, if I may say. And so this inspiration comes from a mishmash of two elements that have come to be known as PASTEL GOTH. Definitely not a theme for the weak of heart when you mix the sweetest pastels with badass elements like skulls and bones. But sure looks like one helluva rebellious wedding concept.
Anyway, enjoy and happy Monday, rebels!
