Once Upon a Time at Casa Marikit

Come daydream with us as we go through Jaimee and Mikko's breathtaking wedding.

If you are an OG reader of our blog, you might recognize this sublime venue from Jaimee and Mikko's wedding. This is because our Maleficent editorial was shot here. Casa Marikit is one of our favorite Italian restaurants in the country, and we couldn't be happier to discover that J+M saw the potential of this beautiful place for their dream wedding. A place that feels like it's straight out of a fairy tale. And yes, it is not a traditional wedding venue. It's a restaurant.  We've been pushing for "anti-reception" wedding venues and intimate weddings like a broken record for 10 years now. And if there's one thing that this pandemic did, is to really push couples out of their comfort zones.

Rebellious Bride Jaimee shared so many wonderful insights on their wedding. And our wish is that their story gives you hope and inspiration that a wonderful and meaningful wedding is still possible at this time.
When was your wedding and how was it affected by the pandemic? How did you overcome the challenges?

We held our wedding last June 12, 2021, during our second year anniversary. Mikko and I really wanted an intimate wedding even before the pandemic struck so cutting the guest list wasn't much of a big deal for us. The challenge came in when our close family and friends— mostly those who live in other countries and the elderlies— could not come because of the restrictions. It sure did give us a bit of a heartache but we just had to move on from it. We were able to overcome issues by first classifying if it was under our control or not. One big issue that was out of our control during this period was the unexpected change in quarantine schedules. We didn’t dwell on it as much but we sure did arm ourselves with back-up plans. On the other hand, the guest list kept on changing because each person had their own issues with their work or health. I would say that this caused me the biggest heartache but I still classified it as something that I can control because it gave me a chance to invite other friends or relatives to the wedding
What advice can you give to brides who may have felt defeated in planning their wedding during the pandemic?

Wedding planning, especially in the time of pandemic, is a true test of your partnership. It may seem as a task or a stressor but try to refrain to see it as such. Always remember that this is your day. You are not hosting a party or directing a show. You are inviting people to celebrate this milestone with you as a couple.

Try to stay on the safe side and think ahead. I cannot suggest people to invite x number of people but it would be great if you could stay close within restrictions. Be mindful of the high-risk people in your guest list and consider having everyone tested, for your own peace of mind.

Most of all, if you really are feeling defeated, try to step back a bit and remember the very reason why you are getting married and start from there again. Weddings shouldn't be all about the spectacle but I have to admit that it’s easy to get caught in that rabbit hole. So just try to step back and think of this beautiful union that you are about to have with your partner and try to stick within the essentials
We already know that the pandemic created some negative effects to weddings but what do you think were the POSITIVE side or silver linings if any?

Having an intimate wedding felt so beautiful and sacred. We were able to celebrate with the people who were truly a part of our relationship. They didn't just know us by name but they know the hardships and challenges that we had to go through to reach our wedding day. Everyone cheered for us, cried with us and felt the love that we shared on that special day. It was truly a blessing.
"As with many things in life, always be mindful of your perspective in planning a wedding. The pandemic may have made it difficult but try to consider the positive things that you could gain from it, ie, going to easy and traffic-free zoom meetings, less cost, having more time  plan with your fiancé, going online shopping for souvenirs and more."

Please share credits to your wedding suppliers and special shoutouts to MVPs that really helped you execute during this hard times

I’d like to thank our video and photog team, Lula and Pearl, I am such a fan of their works and talent. I would say that a big chunk of the wedding day is spent in front of the camera and I am so grateful because the team was able to make me feel comfortable and they were very mindful of my energy during that day.
We are also very grateful for Mishi and TJ of Casa Marikit. Thank you so much for granting our wish and opening your beautiful restaurant and hotel for our wedding. We cannot thank you enough and we wish you all the best in you business! Also to their GM, Ms. Bambi, thank you for accommodating our requests and for being so approachable.

To Mark, our main man, the wedding coordinator, thank you for being a friend during this stressful times. Thank you for listening to my whims and taking note of my numerous requests! The combination of your assertiveness and bubbly attitude made us trust you and enjoy your company at the same time.

Of course, it goes without saying that Gideon Hermosa made this day extra special for us and our guests. I've always thought that Gideon is the bride of brides because every girl dreams of him as their wedding florist. But I would like to take this space and thank Gideon, again, not just for his talent but for being such a beautiful person. He didn't just design the venue, he lessened our stress by showing us that he is in control of the situation (mainly because we had rain scares during that day). He is such a calm and down to earth person which made us admire and trust him more. Ms. Angelica, our account manager from House of Hermosa was also a delight to deal with. She accepted and replied to my every request with a smile and Gideon didn't fail to execute my wishes and more. House of Hermosa is more than just Gideon’s talent, they have so many VIP clients but they didn't make us feel any less. They make each wedding as beautiful and grand on its own.

I would also recommend being hands-on on your detailing and planning. It’s true that this day will go on so fast so make sure to savor every planning day. Know what you want and don't be shy to voice it our to your suppliers. They are there to help you attain that design or peg that you want however unique you want it to be. Be particular with your requests and communicate it properly with them.

15 Awesome Ways to Incorporate Geometric Details

Geometric weddings have been all the rage in the past few years.  It is the perfect aesthetic for couples who prefer a more modern and contemporary design. Symmetry, interesting shapes, and clean lines are fun to add in a wedding because it creates some sort of balance between feminine and masculine details. And this being a popular theme, Pinterest-worthy pegs are already looking the same. How many times have you seen a geometric-shaped jewelry box with flowers inside it?

Here are 15 unique ways to incorporate the geometric feel in your wedding in more ways than one.

1. This invitation suite from www.minted.com has a textured 3-D feel and uses bold colors that aren't typically used in a wedding invite.

Simply Toni & Paul

Toni and Paul's wedding was clearly rebellious in so many ways. We'd  probably call it an "un-celebrity wedding". From the fact that the bride did her preps at home, to her understated Vera Wang gown (that seemed to transform its colors into a pale kind of blush when hit by the perfect lighting), to how the bride was so secure of herself that she didn't seem to mind sharing the limelight with her maid-of-honor and sister, to the fact that the main entourage consisted of both the couple's immediate families, to Toni's very original grand bridal entrance, to the very fact that they chose Metrophoto to do their wedding photography, oh we could go on and on and on. But those are mostly the 'superficial' ways this wedding could be classified as creative and downright rebellious.

On a deeper level, this was so different because this was a couple who seemed to have defied many impressions. It was also a wedding that focused on the two most important things often overlooked by all the hullabaloo that goes on in a wedding: the ceremony and the people who witness it.

So cheers to Toni and Paul. Like every other couple, this day was about love and taking the leap of faith. But unlike other couples, this was a wedding that definitely didn't conform - a reflection of how rebelliously perfect they really are together.

All-White Mardi Gras

There's something about Poveda's graduating batch of 2014 that makes you feel like you can expect great, rebellious things from the girls (and perhaps their parents? *wink*). After all, if their prom last year and their ball this year are any indication, then this batch is definitely on to exciting times ahead.

We once presented a mardi gras wedding concept to a client. Alas, the couple didn't pick that concept. So when we found out about Poveda's grad ball theme, we felt quite giddy about it. Gideon Hermosa, Jason Magbanua, Oly Ruiz, Madge Lejano...and for the best dressed, you have Veluz and what more can you expect? I can't wait to see the video.

Congratulations, ladies! We can't wait to see what you'll come up with for your debuts and weddings! And have a blast at college--for this is just the beginning ;)

Rebellious Idea - The Frozen Wedding

It's been awhile since we last made a Rebellious Idea post but with Frozen coming out, we just had to make one! I never had that much expectations with Frozen. In my opinion, the last epic Disney movies that really came out were Mulan & Hercules. After that, they just kind of struggled (perhaps because they also focused on Pixar?). With Frozen, I FINALLY felt like the magical days of Little Mermaid, Lion King, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, and Hercules are here again. Frozen has that same flair. I'm so in love with it maybe because it has brought out the child in me again--but at the same time, it's a new generation of Disney that I have come to experience with my own little family.

The film is ooooozing with wedding ideas! And I don't care if there's no ice in the Philippines. I think that the same way that Olaf loves the idea of summer and the sun (even if that doesn't even make sense--which makes it sooo hilarious), we can reverse that into tropical meets ice. We've never been one to care much for rules. And as Elsa would say, "The cold never bothered me anyway". So let's start!

THE FASHION

The Bride as Elsa, the Ice Queen

(Gown by Elie Saab)

Cool as ice. That's the peg for the bride as she exudes Elsa in all of her magical, snow flake glory.
We imagine her gown to be as sparkly, fluid, and almost kind of see-through like--the same effect it had in the movie when Elsa transformed herself in the "Let It Go" sequence.

Alternate Look: Elsa has two looks in the movie--the first one was when she was still prim & proper, and the other one when she became icy cool. So perhaps the bride can also have two looks?

Other bridal elements that are "Elsa inspired" would be her long braids adorned with maybe flowers or crystals. When it comes to the makeup, you can either follow the purple frosted eyes or keep it more simple with a natural ethereal look.

As for her bouquet, why a snowflake bouquet looks absolutely gorgeous and magical! Can somebody please consider a snowflake bouquet??? It looks soooo breathtaking! (Sigh). Now as for the shoes, Elsa's "signature move" is when she stomps with her killer shoes--so a kick-ass pair of pumps will definitely finish the look.

The Maid-of-Honor as Anna

(Gown by Elie Saab)

The maid-of-honor has to be inspired by no other than Elsa's sister, Anna. Anna is kind of the opposite of Elsa in a sense that she has that "Spring/Summer Season" kind of quality to her. Her various outfits in the movie always have prints on them--mostly flowers. So we wanted to maintain that same vibe. In the movie, Elsa and Anna almost have equal billing. And we reckon that when it comes to a Frozen themed wedding, the bride should be rebellious enough to share the spotlight with her maid-of-honor as well (wouldn't it be even more emotional if the MOH was also a super close sister?).

The Entourage as Ice Princesses

(Gowns by Elie Saab)

I love the idea of making the entourage look like ice princesses. After all, this is a Disney-themed kind of wedding so everybody has to look just as magical and fantastical as the bride. Top the look with braided hairstyles, ice-coated nail polish effects, and instead of bouquets create a giant DIY ornament that has flowers inside!

 The Men as Prince Charming

Technically, Elsa doesn't have a "love team" in the movie (which is refreshing for a Disney film!). And the only prince ended up being a villain (sorry for the spoiler! WATCH THE MOVIE!). But it is a modern fairy tale so it kind of makes sense to dress up the guys in dapper outfits that have like a prince charming quality about it.

The Flower Girls as Little Elsa and Little Anna

The flower girls will be in blue and green satin dresses with exaggerated bow sashes. Purple flowers were one of the main spring elements in the movie so we wanted to incorporate that by having the flower girls carry baskets of purple pretties :)

THE ELEMENTS

Crystals, Icy Blue, and Snowflakes are just some of the templates that can be used to create that Frozen-themed reception. Use these elements to layer the look as much as you can. But not everything should be about this because it's the "obvious" kind of winter or ice themed wedding. Add it to create volume but the key is to make it unique to Frozen as it can be. See below:

Olaf, Olaf, and more Olaf! It wouldn't really be a Frozen wedding if Olaf wasn't around, right? Use him as an element where possible! It would also be nice to have doodles of memorable quotes from the movie such as: "Some people are worth melting for", "Love will thaw a frozen heart", or "Love is an open door with you" :)

Devil in the details. There are other Frozen-inspired details that may not necessarily be obvious but to true blue fans, these elements are worth including: intricately decorated doors, a wooden swing set, and paintings are just some of the incidental elements in the movie that can make it even more personal.
