Once Upon a Time at Casa Marikit

Come daydream with us as we go through Jaimee and Mikko's breathtaking wedding.

If you are an OG reader of our blog, you might recognize this sublime venue from Jaimee and Mikko's wedding. This is because our Maleficent editorial was shot here. Casa Marikit is one of our favorite Italian restaurants in the country, and we couldn't be happier to discover that J+M saw the potential of this beautiful place for their dream wedding. A place that feels like it's straight out of a fairy tale. And yes, it is not a traditional wedding venue. It's a restaurant.  We've been pushing for "anti-reception" wedding venues and intimate weddings like a broken record for 10 years now. And if there's one thing that this pandemic did, is to really push couples out of their comfort zones.

Rebellious Bride Jaimee shared so many wonderful insights on their wedding. And our wish is that their story gives you hope and inspiration that a wonderful and meaningful wedding is still possible at this time.
When was your wedding and how was it affected by the pandemic? How did you overcome the challenges?

We held our wedding last June 12, 2021, during our second year anniversary. Mikko and I really wanted an intimate wedding even before the pandemic struck so cutting the guest list wasn't much of a big deal for us. The challenge came in when our close family and friends— mostly those who live in other countries and the elderlies— could not come because of the restrictions. It sure did give us a bit of a heartache but we just had to move on from it. We were able to overcome issues by first classifying if it was under our control or not. One big issue that was out of our control during this period was the unexpected change in quarantine schedules. We didn’t dwell on it as much but we sure did arm ourselves with back-up plans. On the other hand, the guest list kept on changing because each person had their own issues with their work or health. I would say that this caused me the biggest heartache but I still classified it as something that I can control because it gave me a chance to invite other friends or relatives to the wedding
What advice can you give to brides who may have felt defeated in planning their wedding during the pandemic?

Wedding planning, especially in the time of pandemic, is a true test of your partnership. It may seem as a task or a stressor but try to refrain to see it as such. Always remember that this is your day. You are not hosting a party or directing a show. You are inviting people to celebrate this milestone with you as a couple.

Try to stay on the safe side and think ahead. I cannot suggest people to invite x number of people but it would be great if you could stay close within restrictions. Be mindful of the high-risk people in your guest list and consider having everyone tested, for your own peace of mind.

Most of all, if you really are feeling defeated, try to step back a bit and remember the very reason why you are getting married and start from there again. Weddings shouldn't be all about the spectacle but I have to admit that it’s easy to get caught in that rabbit hole. So just try to step back and think of this beautiful union that you are about to have with your partner and try to stick within the essentials
We already know that the pandemic created some negative effects to weddings but what do you think were the POSITIVE side or silver linings if any?

Having an intimate wedding felt so beautiful and sacred. We were able to celebrate with the people who were truly a part of our relationship. They didn't just know us by name but they know the hardships and challenges that we had to go through to reach our wedding day. Everyone cheered for us, cried with us and felt the love that we shared on that special day. It was truly a blessing.
"As with many things in life, always be mindful of your perspective in planning a wedding. The pandemic may have made it difficult but try to consider the positive things that you could gain from it, ie, going to easy and traffic-free zoom meetings, less cost, having more time  plan with your fiancĂ©, going online shopping for souvenirs and more."

Please share credits to your wedding suppliers and special shoutouts to MVPs that really helped you execute during this hard times

I’d like to thank our video and photog team, Lula and Pearl, I am such a fan of their works and talent. I would say that a big chunk of the wedding day is spent in front of the camera and I am so grateful because the team was able to make me feel comfortable and they were very mindful of my energy during that day.
We are also very grateful for Mishi and TJ of Casa Marikit. Thank you so much for granting our wish and opening your beautiful restaurant and hotel for our wedding. We cannot thank you enough and we wish you all the best in you business! Also to their GM, Ms. Bambi, thank you for accommodating our requests and for being so approachable.

To Mark, our main man, the wedding coordinator, thank you for being a friend during this stressful times. Thank you for listening to my whims and taking note of my numerous requests! The combination of your assertiveness and bubbly attitude made us trust you and enjoy your company at the same time.

Of course, it goes without saying that Gideon Hermosa made this day extra special for us and our guests. I've always thought that Gideon is the bride of brides because every girl dreams of him as their wedding florist. But I would like to take this space and thank Gideon, again, not just for his talent but for being such a beautiful person. He didn't just design the venue, he lessened our stress by showing us that he is in control of the situation (mainly because we had rain scares during that day). He is such a calm and down to earth person which made us admire and trust him more. Ms. Angelica, our account manager from House of Hermosa was also a delight to deal with. She accepted and replied to my every request with a smile and Gideon didn't fail to execute my wishes and more. House of Hermosa is more than just Gideon’s talent, they have so many VIP clients but they didn't make us feel any less. They make each wedding as beautiful and grand on its own.

I would also recommend being hands-on on your detailing and planning. It’s true that this day will go on so fast so make sure to savor every planning day. Know what you want and don't be shy to voice it our to your suppliers. They are there to help you attain that design or peg that you want however unique you want it to be. Be particular with your requests and communicate it properly with them.

Nuptial Spectacles: Should You Wear Your Glasses On Your Wedding Day?

Brides have a lot to think about on the big day. Especially when it comes to their appearance. They’re acutely aware that all eyes in the room will be on them, and that their image will adorn not just their own wedding snaps but the ones that their friends and relatives will take home with them, share online and look over for years to come. As such, they want to walk down the aisle as the very best version of themselves. Every bride wants to assemble a look that is both becoming of the occasion and true to who she is as a person. She wants to feel beautiful and perhaps more importantly she wants to feel like herself.

Boracay Weddings – Post Closure Update

Photography by Mayad Studios / Styling by Teddy Manuel / HMUA by The Makeup Studio Boracay by Madge Lejano / Coordination by Events by Amanda Tirol
/ Wedding Venue by Shangri-La Boracay

In 2018, President Duterte mandated a rehabilitation program for the island of Boracay which kicked off with a 6-month closure, with a full completion still looming ahead. As of this writing (April 2019), the island is on soft opening and still looks pretty raw. There are demolished buildings (that look like war-torn scenes from a movie) fully exposed on the beach, the government not even covering it up like it is some sort of sinister warning. Meanwhile, at the back of the beach, it is filled with construction work--the dust mixing in with the salty and hot air.

Your Love Story Is Unique. Tell It.

http://www.rebelliousbrides.com/2015/05/a-mockingjay-wedding.html

The hysteria of planning your big day is like nothing you will have ever experienced. There is just so much to do, so much to plan and think about, so much to consider and so much you don’t want to compromise on. It’s stressful and imperfect, but it’s love. But no matter how lost in the decisions you may feel, there is one thing you should keep in mind: this day of yours, your wedding day, is meant to celebrate the love you and your fiance have for one another and the story you have shared.

The "Bad Girl" Wedding Cake

We have another yummy post today, Rebels! And today, we are excited to share with you the details of our cake collaboration with Sugarplum Pastries. We reached out to Lovely Jiao of Sugarplum Pastries a couple of months ago, to work on a 'bomb' cake idea. We've seen their work before and just really loved their creativity. And we wanted to see if it was possible to make a black cake that would look like chalk doodles were written on it. Lovely fondly calls this cake, "The Bad Girl." Which is such a cute and fun name, and something you would definitely NOT expect a wedding cake would be called lol.

The Rebel Bride in Dreads

Boy, oh boy. Do we have a treat for you rebels. Last week, we officially announced the creation of our new blog categories. One of which is Beauty which will focus on bridal beauty looks, skincare, and features focused on wedding hair & makeup artists.

And what better way to usher-in the start of the Beauty category, with real-life rebel bride Erin who had dreadlocks on her wedding day. Yes, you read that right--DREADLOCKS!

15 Awesome Ways to Incorporate Geometric Details

Geometric weddings have been all the rage in the past few years.  It is the perfect aesthetic for couples who prefer a more modern and contemporary design. Symmetry, interesting shapes, and clean lines are fun to add in a wedding because it creates some sort of balance between feminine and masculine details. And this being a popular theme, Pinterest-worthy pegs are already looking the same. How many times have you seen a geometric-shaped jewelry box with flowers inside it?

Here are 15 unique ways to incorporate the geometric feel in your wedding in more ways than one.

1. This invitation suite from www.minted.com has a textured 3-D feel and uses bold colors that aren't typically used in a wedding invite.

"Rising Tide"

For almost one year, the blog has been silent. But you guys never faltered. Views are up. Support from the wedding industry is overwhelming. Social media is at a turning point.

One of these days, we will share with you the honest-to-goodness reason why we kept silent for a year. But for now, let us tell you that we are back with a vengeance.

For a year we've been figuring out how to evolve the blog. And one of the things that we wanted to do is to expand the categories that we can write about. For one thing, RB Mica and I are exploding with more ideas that go beyond the usual wedding features. And on the other hand, we realize that other wedding details get lost in templated features which is not fair to makeup artists, or florists, or even the caterer. We also understand that you guys WANT and NEED to know more about these details. And that's really the reason why we've come up with a plan to develop new categories in the blog. Here's a rundown of the categories that you will be expecting:

FASHION
All things wedding styling for brides, grooms, entourage, and even guests

BEAUTY
All things related to makeup, hair, and skincare for before, during, and after the wedding

TASTE
All things related to wedding menus, cocktails, cakes, and everything yummy in-between

DETAILS
All things related to wedding bouquets, styling, tablescapes, invites, DIYs, and all the other details you want to add on your big day

TRAVEL
All things related to honeymoon ideas, destination weddings, shoot locations, and other trips

And we will still have our current categories on features, concepts/ideas, and of course our infamous controversial write-ups (which we haven't done in a while but we have some eyebrow-raising musings coming your way)

And all the content for these categories are going to be expanded on Instagram and Youtube

Along with these categories, we will also be changing the blog design soon. For now, we just wanted to announce that we will expand the blog's content and you will see the blog evolve over the next few weeks and months.

It took us a year to finally push through with this idea. One of the hurdles was the fact that we wanted a total overhaul of our blog and brand right away. Which we are now understanding, is not necessarily a good thing because you tend to overthink and delay things and you miss out on the "now" and being present. The thing is, we've actually always had these types of content since we launched in 2011 but it just wasn't archived or deliberately communicated that way. At the end of the day, we've always been a personal blog, and with personal blogs it's inevitable to see the raw evolution of the space. It's more real, authentic, and intimate that way. So we are dropping the idea of a big overhaul and just keep churning out content as we slowly transition. So join us in this new journey, rebels. It's going to be one helluva ride once again.

XOXO,
RB Kai

PS. The title of the blog is also a foreshadowing of more things to come *wink*

We Can Be Heroes

A Rebellious Bride who allowed for her groom to wear a Batman mask on their wedding day is a bride we would definitely want to hang out with. Paloma is one such bride and more. The bride wore two wedding gowns on her wedding in Madrid, Spain.  One of the gowns was her grandma's vintage nightdress deconstructed with satin and lace. And the other she handcrafted along with her friends from Spanish brand Suma Cruz. The boys from the wedding party were allowed to wear Spiderman outfits  -- and let me tell you, there's nothing more a little boy would want to do during a grown-up party. This wedding was full of love, life, and laughter in the most effortless way possible.

It's always heroic when two people have the courage to get married--but it takes super heroes to make the wedding rebellious.

Salud to Paloma and Edu!

Honeymoon Idea - Hurawalhi, Maldives

Over the next few weeks and months, you will probably notice that the blog will gradually undergo a few changes in terms of look and content. And one of the things you will definitely see more of, is a separate category that will focus on Travels (RB Travels) -- and by that we mean, travels that are still related to weddings such as honeymoon destinations, engagement and wedding travel photo shoot locations, just to name a few.

Bonnie and Clyde

Two bankers in love and about to do a heist. Well that's Al & Rose's Bonnie and Clyde alter ego. Yes they really are bankers in real life. And for their engagement shoot, they wanted to be naughty by maybe  doing that one thing that is most likely not in the banker's code of ethics (assuming there is one).

Because let's face it...we have all fantasized about breaking those damn rules once in a while, haven't we? ;)

Proof that Philippine Engagement Sessions are Uber Creative

There are engagement sessions, and then there's Philippine-made engagement sessions.

You only need to Google "engagement photos" to see what  conventional engagement photos look like. Basically you'll get prom-like lovey dovey, cheesy photos that are set in gardens and other natural scenery. Worse, some photos are not even of good quality. And while there's completely nothing wrong with those types of engagement photos, you really have to hand it to Philippine wedding artists (and couples) for daring to push the envelope.  Because if you haven't known this already, Philippine-made engagement photos/concepts are outstandingly innovative, compelling, and can even be unnerving at times.

Over the past six years, we've seen how engagement photos have evolved. And we understand why most Filipinos not only would want to have an engagement session, but would be compelled to make it big, bold, and beautiful. On the part of the couples, the allure of a crazy prenup might stem from the fact that Philippine Weddings are traditional, strict, and conventional--oftentimes dictated by parents.  And so an outrageous engagement session gives the couples a chance to kind of have fun and show their rebellious side. It balances things out, so to speak. On the other side of the spectrum, wedding artists like to do these creative sessions because it helps them to build a relationship with their couples before the wedding and at the same time, it keeps their creative juices running full as it can often get drained by the weekly repetitive grind of covering church weddings.

Here we have 20 engagement sessions that show you just how "Out of this World" engagement shoot concepts in the Philippines can get.  Sometimes the ideas come from the couples themselves to reflect their personalities or to reflect their love story. And on the other times the e-session ideas are proposed by the wedding team themselves to fulfill a creative fantasy project. Seriously 20 examples are not even enough! And just a disclaimer, this is not a contest or a ranking of the top e-sessions out there. Instead, this is a collective appreciation of how  Philippine wedding artists and couples have creatively grown through the years. So here they are. Which one is your favorite?
