Proof that Philippine Engagement Sessions are Uber Creative

There are engagement sessions, and then there's Philippine-made engagement sessions.

You only need to Google "engagement photos" to see what  conventional engagement photos look like. Basically you'll get prom-like lovey dovey, cheesy photos that are set in gardens and other natural scenery. Worse, some photos are not even of good quality. And while there's completely nothing wrong with those types of engagement photos, you really have to hand it to Philippine wedding artists (and couples) for daring to push the envelope.  Because if you haven't known this already, Philippine-made engagement photos/concepts are outstandingly innovative, compelling, and can even be unnerving at times.

Over the past six years, we've seen how engagement photos have evolved. And we understand why most Filipinos not only would want to have an engagement session, but would be compelled to make it big, bold, and beautiful. On the part of the couples, the allure of a crazy prenup might stem from the fact that Philippine Weddings are traditional, strict, and conventional--oftentimes dictated by parents.  And so an outrageous engagement session gives the couples a chance to kind of have fun and show their rebellious side. It balances things out, so to speak. On the other side of the spectrum, wedding artists like to do these creative sessions because it helps them to build a relationship with their couples before the wedding and at the same time, it keeps their creative juices running full as it can often get drained by the weekly repetitive grind of covering church weddings.

Here we have 20 engagement sessions that show you just how "Out of this World" engagement shoot concepts in the Philippines can get.  Sometimes the ideas come from the couples themselves to reflect their personalities or to reflect their love story. And on the other times the e-session ideas are proposed by the wedding team themselves to fulfill a creative fantasy project. Seriously 20 examples are not even enough! And just a disclaimer, this is not a contest or a ranking of the top e-sessions out there. Instead, this is a collective appreciation of how  Philippine wedding artists and couples have creatively grown through the years. So here they are. Which one is your favorite?

Urban Love Prenup

Which one would you rather have? A) A prenup filled with so much mega production but falls flat when it comes to the photos' quality?; or B) An understated prenup concept but with the most awesome photographer? To each her own but I'd rather pick B.

Here's a set from photographer Ryan Ortega. Another one of those innate coolness that oozes out of the couple and the photographer and it didn't have to scream rebelliousness. Love it.

Sherwin + Jazzy - Por Siempre Contigo

Photography by Ryan Ortega
Photographer extraordinaire Ryan Ortega calls Sherwin and Jazzy's union as one of the most memorable weddings he's ever had. And I can see why. There's always something so admirable about Chinese couples who seem to be able to manage tradition, culture, and rebelliousness all at one go. Saying that it takes a lot of courage and creativity would be an understatement. What I love about this wedding is that the couple was actually able to pull off a venue so wonderful, it's so unreal. Zamboanga's National Museum! And the fierce styling even by the groom and the parents! Oh such an electrifying wedding indeed!

Rebellious Bride in RED

Photography by Ryan Ortega
When I saw this blog entry from Photographer Ryan Ortega, I was instantly attracted to the fact that the bride wore a red bridal gown and I knew we had to have it on the blog. Then that's the only time I began to read Ryan's blog about the wedding, and realized it was a 'civil glam wedding'.

Ryan writes:

Ryan Ortega CAN.

"The Rebellious Bride is someone who knows what she wants. Someone who understands the importance of details that speak much about her and her partner, respects the value of one's work, talent, skills and idea, opens her mind to endless possibilities just for the love of staging a rebellious wedding. Above all, she is someone who embraces extraordinary ideas without sacrificing the very reason of their union which is love."

Ryan Ortega on his definition of the Rebellious Bride

Contemporary, Unorthodox, and Chic. Photographer Ryan Ortega definitely knows what he stands for to the hilt. But if I were asked by a bride or a groom, what I thought of Ryan Ortega and if I would personally recommend him, I'd probably say, Ryan Ortega CAN. Why? Because one thing resonated with me when I looked through his body of work--and what bounced back to me was this feeling that Ryan Ortega CAN do whatever you throw at him. Take him to another part of the globe for an engagement shoot, and he CAN deliver. Get him to photograph your traditional wedding and he CAN do it + so much more. Ask him to do something a little bit more rebellious, and he still CAN eagerly be rebellious with you. He CAN evolve. He CAN adapt. He just...CAN!
