Welcome to the Wicked World of Rebellious Brides

Hello rebels--old and new! Have you noticed anything new lately? *wink* *wink*

The blog just had a face lift!!!! Hooray! A bit long overdue, don't you agree?

Blue Sneakers, Bikes and Wedding Tattoos

You've heard about on-the-day wedding videos that it is almost such a common thing in weddings already. But have you ever heard of on-the-day tattoos in a wedding? Well, I've never seen anything like it!
This is one wedding day that truly made their mark! Literally.

"We’ve never been particularly traditional so the standard wedding ceremony did not feel like it was enough.  We wanted a symbol of the wedding being forever, our version of a blood compact.  So beyond just rings, we asked Tattoo de Iloko owner Janer Santos to make our same day wedding tattoo during the reception, in front of all the guests.  We now each have a half of a heart – mine is Ateneo blue and his is La Salle green.  The tattoo symbolizes we are together, the other half of each other, but that we are still two unique individuals."

From the venue, to the bride's shoes, to the groom's ride and the flowergirls' dresses, the details of Nessa and Gil's wedding go against the usual. These two already knew themselves so well that they need not please anybody but themselves. This was a wedding that reeked of reality and rebellion. In fact, it dissolves the fairytale-ish type of weddings that instead of wearing some shimmery high heel,
the bride wore blue sneakers.

"Don't be afraid to stand out. Don't be afraid to shake up peoples' expectations.
Plan with your groom (not your girlfriends or your mom) because it’s his wedding as much as it is yours.   For your wedding, do what makes you both happy!" -Nessa

Pia + Eugene's Lovebirds Wedding

Photography by Nelwin Uy

"I personally think that pulling off a destination wedding scores a perfect 10 in the level of difficulty in terms of logistics, budget, and execution. But the greater challenge during our preparations was when my mom succumbed to cancer, 3 months before our big day. I believe no bride-to-be should ever experience such triple stress and difficult emotional situation (not to mention dealing with the "pamahiins" of not pushing through with the wedding because it would be bad luck). But I kept calm and carried on what I believed my mom would have thought would be best for me."

Rebellious Bride Pia on the Challenges of Planning Her Rebellious Wedding

Pia and Eugene wanted a destination wedding where they could have an intimate wedding for just a party of fifty guests. The couple was smitten by Bellaroca and instantly knew they found their perfect wedding venue. Since they wanted a relaxed vibe, they complemented the island with an offbeat theme of "Lovebirds". Think bird's nests, charming colors as in the pastel-colored feathers of the Lovebirds, pretty calligraphy/illustrations, bird houses galore, non-floral elements, and twigs. The result of which was exactly what the couple wanted--a relaxed, 'chirpy' wedding with a light and happy feeling.

The Navins

Photography by Nelwin Uy
A couple of days ago, photographer Nelwin Uy re-posted the wonderful gay marriage he did in Sonoma, Californa two years ago. It was Nelwin's own way of paying a tribute and he wrote "victory for gay rights in the US!". But back home, coincidentally on the same day that Nelwin posted this wedding, GMA 7 was put on the microscope because of the sensational primetime series, My Husband's Lover. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), through its spokesperson was clearly against the show. The good part was that it made more people watch the show but on the downside, some advertisers shied away from supporting the program through commercial spots.

We've always been a supporter of any kind of love in this blog--and most especially the ones that are fighting for a good cause--whether it's as petty as just fighting for the kind of gown you want--to the downright serious such as fighting for gay marriage. In My Husband's Lover's FB page, they called for love instead of hate. What's not to love? Let's look at The Navin's beautiful wedding--the rain and the rainbow made it even more poetic. Enjoy!

The Wedding Agency: Kathleen & Dingdong

Dingdong + Kathleen: A Romantic Discovery from buterflye on Vimeo.

We'd like to formally congratulate one of our Wedding Agency couples Kathleen & Dingdong for finally tying the knot in Shangri-La, Boracay!

While we impatiently wait for the official photos, we'd like to share with you guys some of the elements of their wedding.

A Modern Fairytale...

When K&D first briefed us, it was quite clear that Kathleen was the romantic one and Dingdong was the more techie one. At the heart of their wedding was that it was going to be a modern fairytale--the best way to describe how Kathleen & Dingdong perfectly blended together as one heart & soul. But since it was a fairytale, it needed a title. A title that literally went through an evolution of sorts. In the end, while finalizing venue locations for their prenup, Kathleen herself had an epiphany of naming their fairytale as a "Romantic Discovery" and the rest you could say, was happily ever after.

The Fairytale/Romantic  part of it represented the bride. While the Modern/Discovery part of it represented the groom. A lot of the design elements were inspired by the modern Rapunzel fairytale 'Tangled'. It was definitely not the usual Boracay wedding elements that we've been used to.

Taken on the actual morning of the wedding day - The most beautiful omen you could possibly have during your wedding is a rainbow- indeed, this day was a going to be a fairytale to remember! (Photo grabbed from the couple's friend Love)
From peg to the actual output, the invitations were inspired by the TV Series Revenge

The bride loves sunsets--the wedding palette was inspired by it! The second beautiful omen of the day arrived before the reception - from Rainbows to Sunsets, it was as if God himself was celebrating with the couple that day.  (Photo grabbed from the couple's sister Zarah)

Sarah & Cayo - The Dreamers' Wedding

Photography by Nelwin Uy
"For me a Rebellious Bride is an anti-template bride.  Just because things are always done a certain way, doesn't mean that you have to do it exactly the same way.  Your wedding has to be unique, not just for the sake of, but unique because it's the two of you.  As the saying goes, "something old and something new"--that's a good place to start.  Take something that's old --- like cake cutting and combine, add or turn it into something new. Make it yours!"
-- Rebellious Bride Sarah Ko-General

Do you guys remember one of my most favorite prenup videos about the two dreamers? Well, this time we are featuring their wedding which is of the same theme.

"Because our theme was conceptual (dreams), it was difficult to execute. If it was something like carnival or movies, then it would have been easier to come up with designs, layouts, etc.  So we had to figure out tangible elements that would tie it back to our concept --- an invite inspired by dream catchers and stars, styling inspired by clouds, daydreaming tents, and so on.  It was a lot harder to plan because nothing was cut-and-paste.  But in the end, it was all worth it.  Love is in the details." -- Sarah

We hope that their story will inspire you to dream and fulfill your very own anti-template weddings Oh and watch out for the siomai booth outside the church! Love the little doodle on the booth--how rebellious! :)

Here are some of the bride's favorite rebellious ideas from their wedding:

Sarah: An interactive invite with a dream catcher logo-–-take the swatch of fabric and write down a wish for us.  Then we collect the “mini kumots” and stitch them together into a patchwork quilt.  What better way to keep our dreams sweet?

Sarah: Wore red, red, red Stella Luna heels while walking down the aisle, and sparkly Zara party flats for the reception.  I got my dream dress from Rosa Clara.

Sarah: For the boys we gave them teal bow ties and button boutonnieres. For my girls we gave them  personalized parasols (hand-painted by former-partner-now-ninong Lito Gemora) and cute little accessories from Bangkok

Sarah: For his boutonniere, Cayo wore a mini replica of his surfboard

Sarah: I wanted to do something a little bit more special for the misalette.  Got some glassine bags and filled them with confetti.  My bridesmaids helped me punch out the confetti hearts.

Sarah: We also prepared a siomai/fishball/squidball stand outside the church!

Sarah: We fashioned “kissing bells” for seat cards and gave away slippers for “dancing shoes”. Guests were welcomed with “Partying/Recovering” door hangers

Sarah: In line with our theme of dreams, we also created “dreaming tents”.  Inside, you could make your own souvenir --- your very own dream catcher, doodle in dream journals, or gobble up some marshmallows.  We also hid some small toys under the pillows as giveaways.

Sarah: Tables should be playful, interactive and fun!  Tables were “dream-themed”.  You could be seated in the pajama table, milk and cookies, lemongrass, back rub, etc.  Japs Perez, my former visualizer helped us paint tablecloths with our dream catcher logo.  To bring out their playful spirit, we gave out sparklers, and had dreamy little details strewn on top of the tables. Guests were encouraged to interact through dreamlibs and a group photo scavenger hunt (art: Kat Encanto, copy: EJ Galang)

Sarah: Instead of the usual cake cutting ceremony, we wanted to do a locking ceremony instead.  Cayo and I wrote our names on a padlock and attached them onto a “dream cloud”.  Guests were asked to add their own love locks onto the cloud.

"Don't be afraid to go for your dream wedding.  Ideas (and helpful friends) are everywhere.  You just have to ask.  And feed them after. :)"- Sarah

Congratulations to Sarah & Cayo. We are truly inspired and in awe of your creative ideas! And to inspire everyone further, here again is Sarah & Cayo's DIY prenup video. Think big, dream big!
