Boracay Weddings – Post Closure Update

In 2018, President Duterte mandated a rehabilitation program for the island of Boracay which kicked off with a 6-month closure, with a full completion still looming ahead. As of this writing (April 2019), the island is on soft opening and still looks pretty raw. There are demolished buildings (that look like war-torn scenes from a movie) fully exposed on the beach, the government not even covering it up like it is some sort of sinister warning. Meanwhile, at the back of the beach, it is filled with construction work--the dust mixing in with the salty and hot air.

This blog of ours is grounded on love. It all started because we found the love of our lives and it (the blog) saw us through a lot of milestones and (mis) adventures in a span of four years. It started because we had an insane amount of passion for weddings. It started because we simply love to be there for brides who were like us. All You Need is Love and...Boracay

It's no secret that I love Boracay weddings. But what I love even more are Rebellious Boracay Brides. No two Bora wedding is alike. Despite the fact that it's pretty much the same island and often times the same rockstar talents, each wedding comes out with a different vibe. But of course there are still certain Boracay weddings that kind of stand out for me--and those are the ones that are perfectly photographed and perfectly executed with simple but significant elements. A Rebellious Boracay Bride is someone who knows how to bring out the best of what the island can offer. After all, the beach is your backdrop, what else is there to do but just add significant touches of your own? 


I've seen sooooo many Boracay weddings. So I naturally love the ones that are going against the templates. Take for example Nick & Sheeva's Boracay wedding. Beautiful calligraphy, Asya as their backdrop, emerald jewelry, copper-colored cups, and bicycle as a design element--it's a new kind of Boracay wedding and it worked flawlessly.

Wedding Agency: Kathleen & Dingdong's Happy Ending (Nelwin Uy Edition)

Hooray! Official wedding photos from Nelwin Uy are finally up on his blog! WOOT! And this is the first time we are seeing the video mapping projection from Kathleen & Dingdong's Romantic Discovery Wedding! So exciting! :)


For those who are regulars on the blog, you might have known by now that Kathleen & Dingdong are our Wedding Agency clients and we've blogged about them like sooo many times already haha! (Back track on one of the features HERE).

Flora & Raf's Eco Chic Boracay Wedding

Boracay weddings will always be my fave. While all Boracay weddings are unique, there are some elements that are naturally more popular and will end up the same. For instance, turquoise color palettes or fun summer shades are common choices--not that there's anything wrong with that (my own wedding had those colors too). But once in awhile we see Boracay brides who are bold enough to experiment with other ideas that also work so beautifully well. Except for the famous Boracay waters itself, there are no turquoise details in Flora & Raf's wedding. Just the most magical emerald hues, teals, and greens that make for an eco chic look. Of course, this is just but one aspect of the wedding. Overall it was a laidback and organically love-filled union that is as awe-inspiring as the island itself.

The Full Wedding Film

I've never seen a full wedding video, have you? We've fallen in love with the concept of "same day edit" that we've forgotten what a full one must look like. Imagine getting someone like Jason Magbanua, which is such a premium, and yet we've only really just seen the short film versions--and that's how good he is because you give him that full trust, and you are actually more than happy to just receive the 2 to 3-minute highlights of it.

So when we received our full video, we didn't have any expectations. At the very least I figured, it would obviously have more clips of the wedding. But I never in a million years would have known that the full edit was actually even better than the short version---if that's even possible to fathom.



Watching this video brought about so many emotions and so many surprises. The DVD also comes with a copy of your vows--which is a great reminder of why you guys married each other.

The Wedding Agency: Kathleen & Dingdong

We'd like to formally congratulate one of our Wedding Agency couples Kathleen & Dingdong for finally tying the knot in Shangri-La, Boracay! 

 While we impatiently wait for the official photos, we'd like to share with you guys some of the elements of their wedding. 

 A Modern Fairytale...

 When K&D first briefed us, it was quite clear that Kathleen was the romantic one and Dingdong was the more techie one. At the heart of their wedding was that it was going to be a modern fairytale--the best way to describe how Kathleen & Dingdong perfectly blended together as one heart & soul. But since it was a fairytale, it needed a title. A title that literally went through an evolution of sorts. In the end, while finalizing venue locations for their prenup, Kathleen herself had an epiphany of naming their fairytale as a "Romantic Discovery" and the rest you could say, was happily ever after.

The Fairytale/Romantic  part of it represented the bride. While the Modern/Discovery part of it represented the groom. A lot of the design elements were inspired by the modern Rapunzel fairytale 'Tangled'. It was definitely not the usual Boracay wedding elements that we've been used to.

RB Goes Gatsby, Part 2 of 3

The Gatsby party is heating up as we take you to a journey through this fantastical second part of our 3-part RB Gatsby Special Feature. And this time around, our muse Amanda Tirol takes on the role of the charismatic, enigmatic, leading lady of the book/movie Daisy Buchanan as she models the works of The Cecilio Abad Design Team feat. Vidal Clayton. 

 In this feature, we also finally reveal our Gatsby-worthy Anti-Reception venue location, Casa Roces Malacanan. So pop, fizz, and sizzle and enjoy! 

"It's so you!", Madge Lejano tells me when Amanda comes out wearing her first Clayton gown. And I'd have to agree on that. Clayton is probably my most favorite gown designer right now--and if you've been reading the blog lately, we've been featuring a lot of his works. What's not to love? His gowns are very intricate but not too overbearing. There is a clear deviation from the typical white gowns but there is a balance between the classic and the fashion forward.

RB Goes Gatsby, Part 1 of 3

As early as December 2012, the blog released its Fearless Forecast for 2013. Two of which were: 1) A renewed love for 20s-inspired weddings because of the Gatsby movie; and 2) New anti-reception venue discoveries. 

 In this 3-part special feature, we've collaborated with some of the biggest names in the wedding industry to come up with our own interpretation of how to localize a Gatsby-inspired wedding. After all, inspiration is one thing but rebelliousness always has to have its own twist and own vision.

Rebellious Royalty Bride Amanda

Mayad titled their blog feature on Amanda & Bong as "Boracay Royalty" and we couldn't agree more. But we'd like to add the word Rebellious to that. Not only was this a 10th year renewal, the Queen of Boracay Amanda Tirol didn't know anything about it! And she wore such a fierce gown to the church at that!

Most of Amanda's former clients can really attest to the fact that she's "God's gift to Boracay Brides". Saying that she gives you all of what she's got and that she'll fight for your dream wedding would be an understatement. So to see her in her own shining moment is such a breath of fresh air indeed.

Before Rebellious Brides, There Was Once A "Bora Hop"

Prologue - It's Feb. 13, 2013 midnight-- 2 days before my second year wedding anniversary. I can't sleep--tossing and turning trying to remember if my own wedding has a feature in the blog. And since I couldn't get the question out of my head, I open my laptop and begin to search the keywords "Bora Hop" in Rebellious Brides. And I've realized, it's not here. Sure, I've mentioned it in several other topics but there's actually no dedicated feature whatsoever. And it dawned on me that I've been featuring other people's weddings when I haven't even shared mine.

 The fact of the matter is, before Rebellious Brides, before The Wedding Agency, first and foremost there was once a "Bora Hop". A wedding almost two years ago that somehow started all this rebellious blogging and wedding conceptualizing in the first place. It came before the blog and that's why it hasn't been featured here yet. 

The thing is, the "Bora Hop" has been featured everywhere else. So I'll try my best to make this different by sharing my old pegs, highlighting more on the rebellious thought processes, and mixing everything up with other wedding files that aren't necessarily from the official photos.  

This feature marks the FIFTEENTH feature the wedding has had in 2 years (coincidentally, our anniversary is Feb. 15). So I think it's probably time to retire the "Bora Hop". And I'm making this count. Enjoy :)

The Proposal - Well there was none, making this wedding rebellious from start to finish. It was simply two adults, having a serious talk, realizing it was time to get married and it was now or never. That night after the talk, I texted Jason Magbanua asking for February 2011 available dates and he knew right there and then what it was all about. No questions asked. A true fan dork, he was actually the first to know.

 The Engagement Earrings - "I don't want an engagement ring. I don't need one." This was the challenge I have somehow inadvertently imposed on my then fiancee. So rebellious as he was too, he worked around this and found a loophole. "Everyone else has an engagement ring. But you deserve something no one else has. So I got you a pair of engagement earrings", my fiancee said.

They are my twinkle stars. Secretly, I feel like I'm Jem from Jem and the Holograms when I wear them.

 A Challenging Budget Means Challenging The Norms - I've wanted a Boracay wedding since 2002. Hence, even without knowing who my future groom was, I've already been computing and recomputing how much a Boracay wedding could possibly be worth. The calculations seemed to point to one direction---it could easily go up to a seven-figured budget. So I took a step backward. I realized that this is the amount it will take to have the "usual" templated Boracay wedding.

I looked at our own Bora trips for inspiration
So I closed my eyes and looked to how we were like as a couple. How have we come to enjoy Boracay? Our trip would never be complete without having breakfast in Real Coffee. Watching the beach for hours and hours in Station 1. Trying out a new spa discovery. Heading on over to The Tides' Sun Deck for Happy Hour. Dinner in True Food. Then partying the night away wherever the thumping music took us. And so I typed in my Excel Sheets the concept of the "Bora Hop" and presented it to my fiancee. I plugged in the initial calculations and immediately the budgets were cut by half. This was a wedding that was authentic to who we are and how we enjoyed the island. And it was within a reasonable budget. 

 Our Dream Team - Every couple has one, right? Here's a quick rundown of ours.

  Jason Magbanua was a no-brainer. But I guess the most special part about it was the fact that I've had prior conversations with Jason about wanting to get married in Boracay with my then boyfriend even before I got engaged. "It will happen. 2011 will be your year,  I can feel it. Just text me when it happens, I'll block off my sched," Jason proclaimed. It was as if the wedding god has spoken and the stars would have to align.

 RB Mica was another no-brainer. She was not just a friend but someone I've already worked with from many, many, other shoot collaborations. 

I knew she would be by my side, not just as the makeup artist but also as a friend. 

Hindy Weber Tantoco was yet another no-brainer. She has been my ultimate fashion icon since way back in college. I've been such a longtime fan. From Rustan's U, to Culte Femme. In fact, when my fiancee proposed for me to be his girlfriend, I was wearing a Hindy/Culte Femme cocktail dress. And from girlfriend to wife, I was going to be in a Hindy creation. For me it was not about the latest "it" wedding gown designer. It was more of going back to my own personal style and fashion roots if you will.

 For our photographer and coordinator, there were a lot of choices that cropped up. In the end, it really boiled down to which photographer and coordinator would be the perfect fit based on the concept that we were about to have. We were going to hop around several locations so inevitably we felt that MangoRed was the perfect fit for this crazy rebellious concept. And because we were about to take things to a different route, we knew we had to work with the Queen of Boracay, Amanda Tirol. 


Vision Mood Board

 All White w/ Pops of Color aka, Kate Spade meets Jack Spade. My fiancee and I gravitate towards the creativity behind Kate Spade and Jack Spade. The playful colors, the even more playful touches. But we also enjoy the natural, organic things Boracay had to offer. We didn't want to overdo anything. We still wanted everything to go back to the island. And so we decided with just going for all-white. But agreed that once in a while, some color can pop out. Simple with a twist.

 The Unpopular Guest Count - It was because of the very essence of the wedding's concept, of all the moving around that we knew the guest count had to be intimate. That and the fact that we were on a tight budget. Plus the fact that my fiancee and I have agreed long ago that our wedding would only consist of immediate family and closest friends because we wanted the experience for each guest to be personalized. That we could easily have a party back in Manila anyway. It was probably the most unpopular decision of the wedding. But we were very honest and open about this to everybody else. And back in Manila, our post-wedding party would  separately be known as a fun night to remember. 


 Intimate Wedding. Dream Team. Boracay in its most organic, natural form. All White w/ Pops of Color. These were our main rebellious elements. And this is how it unfolded:
