"Who's That Bride?"

Photography by Zeus Martinez Photography

I personally see tons of wedding photos on my Facebook news feeds and Instagram timeline. Naturally, at some point my feeds become a blur. Then on very rare occasions, a bride catches my attention and makes the blur pause into a perfect rebellious freeze frame that makes me feel giddy. One such moment was when I saw Rebellious Bride Ashley as photographed by Zeus Martinez.

A sudden gush of excitement usually follows this "freeze frame" moment which then compels me to feature.

Bridal Spring 2014 - Rebellious Honorable Mention (Part 1 of 5)

From the Angel Sanchez Bridal Spring 2014 Collection / Source: The Knot
The bridal gowns have been walked down the catwalk aisle and what's our verdict? Though majority are still pretty white and traditional, it's getting there, it's getting there. So much so that this Bridal Spring 2014 report of ours will be 5 parts in total.

We applaud the efforts of designers to showcase something out of the ordinary. But the stigma of wearing something unconventional for brides will never go away if the media, bloggers, observers in general won't stop writing headlines that say "Would you wear something this outrageous?"

It's because of this kinds of headlines that seem harmless that viscously feed on more controversy or debate that makes brides think twice before fully owning their individuality.

Oscar de la Renta / Source: The Knot
That's why here in Rebellious Brides, we REFUSE to write such headlines or descriptions. Instead, we'll call these wonderful creations as the Rebellious Honorable Mention. It's not even about being unconventional per se. It's about opening up yourselves to other options beyond white gowns and beyond the veils--because you know what? It's a form of brainwashing. Knowledge is power and if you actually research on the history of white wedding gowns and the use of veils, they are not even mandatories but fads or current situations of specific periods in time.

We say, pick an inspirational bridal look that personifies who you REALLY are. And one that genuinely resonates with your own personalities and not what is accepted of society.

Here are the honorable mentions but this is just the beginning. There were designers that had full-on unconventional collections. So we are paying individual tributes to: Monique Lhuillier, Reem Acra, Romona Keveza, and Vera Wang. But before that, here are the other designers who had a few noteworthy rebellious ideas:

Theia White played with the concept of the usual train. And in this unnerving hot weather in Manila, don't you think it makes sense to consider a short textured bridal gown such as the one on the left?

Amsale created options for unembellished bridal pantsuits.
This may be missing the usual full skirt but it definitely looks luxe!

Claire Pettibone - Rebellious Bridal Couture

Special thanks to Rebellious Bride Punky for introducing us to Claire Pettibone's work :)
-----

In our blog article, White w/ a Twist, we received a comment from Rebellious Bride Punky that she loves Claire Pettibone's bridal couture style--that they were sweet yet also modern. And I couldn't agree more. Part fairy, part goddess, part medieval, part edgy, her style is rebellious yet totally soft and dreamy. I love that ALL her bridal gowns, and I mean ALL of her creations are so unique and "non-wedding-y" so much so that I had to triple check if I was really looking through the bridal couture section of her website.

Watch the bridal fashion show video below -- it's insane how all the gowns are rebellious in its own way. Let the show take you to places you've never deemed possible!

Here are more photos of Claire's amazing bridal gowns. Which one is your favorite? :)

We understand that going completely anti-white can be a difficult decision for some--perhaps the pressure and the unsolicited comments from friends, relatives, and onlookers can be too much to handle or perhaps it's just plainly not your cup of tea. But don't fret! There are still a lot of ways to innovate and wear a rebellious gown which we'd like to call, "White w/ a Twist" -- it's simply an idea of wearing a traditional white gown but replacing the classic design, cut, bead work, or material into something a little bit more reflective of your personality. Extraordinary bead work on the upper part of the gown creates an illusion that it is more of a silvery gown rather than white. There are also other rebellious techniques that create an effect that the upper part of the gown is a different piece or a fabulous razorback tank top! Later on you will also see designs that have subtle colored bead work at the back or at the bottom, and of course, just like Rebellious Bride Mica, you'll see some gowns that have pops of color as accents.

Where do I get my rebellious creative genes? Before school, and before work, there's family of course...and my brother, my sister-in-law, and my sister (who swears she will elope when her time comes)--are all very rebellious indeed.

Kate Spade Mood Board #1

www.katespade.com
I heart Kate Spade. The love affair started in 2002, when I watched Kate Spade's life story on the lifestyle network. How she boldly created her own niche in New York, had the guts to put her name outside of her bags, despite being an unknown designer, creating buzz among New York's fashionistas resonated with me so well. Up to this very day, Kate Spade stands for out-of-the-box designs, continuously defying luxury goods, and just plainly being silly and charming and quirky. I think Kate Spade makes for wonderful wedding ideas and mood boards. My weddings have all been, very Kate Spade inspired. In fact, the pinwheels used in our wedding was from Kate Spade!

Here are some wonderful ideas from the Kate Spade website. Enjoy!

Countdown to 9-10-11: The Styling

23 days to go! I must admit that I’m getting nervous. And I’m not the nervous type. I guess that’s what happens when you’re so wrapped up with wedding preps and a lot of mixed emotions. You know how you get nightmares of being late when you have an early meeting? I am getting something like that in the bridal sense. I think they even have a term for that. We simply want everything to pan out well. But Marc told me not to worry because everything will turn out okay.

As of last week, I already had two fittings and didn’t want to take off my gown and go to the mall wearing it. I was THAT excited. Haha! Anyway, I’d like to share how we came up with our looks. Marc was really into it when we were discussing and I’m really proud of him for being super hands-on with our wedding.

Since we have a themed wedding, we simply looked into the elements present from the movie and started from there.

When asked on her definition of a Rebellious Bride, Hindy did not define her through words. She "rebelliously" defined the Rebellious Bride through her own body of rebellious work.

Rebellious Idea - Studded Bridal Look

Rebellious Bride by Hindy Weber Tantoco
When Hindy Weber Tantoco emailed me this picture of a pink studded gown, I knew right away that this was meant to be shared with our dear, Rebellious Brides.

For my second wedding, I wore a pink gown--I didn't even think I was the type who would actually wear pink for my own wedding--but I was more concerned with the fit of the gown as opposed to the color so I went ahead with it.

Some people think that the color pink is just "puke-worthy". On the contrary, Hindy's gown just proves, that pink as a color in itself is not wimpy--it's how the color is actually USED, styled, and designed that make all the difference. This gown may be in the girliest color ever imaginable--but it also looks very wicked. I love it! Very rebellious-worthy indeed!

This got me into searching for other "cutie" wedding accessories that can be studded. Check out my discoveries:

Rebellious Bride = shares the same mindset as the fashion icons who dress for themselves, without care nor thought for others' opinions. Rarely do they disappoint because they instinctively go with what works for them and people can only marvel at their originality of vantage point and at how only they can pull it off. Cheers to the rebellious bride for being walking-talking-demos of the movie line "Leave great enough alone!"

Anti-White

When J Lucas Reyes saw me during our Brunch shoot, 5 hours before our second wedding, he took one look at my pink gown and said "Crazy. You're so anti-wedding!"

Even before my first wedding in Boracay, I already knew that I was not going to be destined for a white wedding gown. There was one time in college, when out of curiosity I bought a wedding magazine and my friends and I looked at every page, and I announced to them, I won't wear white when my time comes. My friends tried to convince me otherwise. They said, it's the only chance you'll ever get to wear a white gown! My only thought balloon was, was wearing a white gown a milestone in life? Because from what I could recall, you already had to wear a white gown during baptism, and a white dress during your first communion--isn't that enough?!?!?
