I've just realized that I haven't actually written a blog tribute to one of my most favorite international designers, Tadashi Shoji. I love him because he makes curvy women like me feel beautiful. I have two of his gowns and both make me feel like Juliet Capulet. I also love him because his creations are quite unique, and always with a hint of twist on classic styles. And most of all? His creations are soooooooo unbelievably and thoughtfully affordable (check out my pricing guide for bridal gowns below).

Here Comes the Groom

When we posted the entry Rock the Suit, all we had was the stylist's photo of the legendary suit with the mystery groom. Turns out our rebellious groom's name is Allan. But what's equally rebellious is his bride Jo, who was more than willing to shift the spotlight to the groom. Now, that's unconditional love!

Jo: Usually, I find weddings to be the day of the bride. But for us, I'm so happy that my husband was the center of attention. I love it when its him on the spotlight. I don't know why but I'm just more contented. With his suit, his vow, his dancing skills, he truly was the "it" person of that day.

The Brunch & Church Wedding #Throwback

June 4, 2011 - 10ish in the morning - Cafe 1771

 My good friend Nins and I were looking at the fun scene that surrounded us. It was a couple of hours before my church wedding and there we were drinking wine, doing brunch, dressed to the nines a'la Gossip Girl, and having a shoot with Ian Cruz and J Lucas Reyes. I called myself a 'rebellious bride' and Nins said: "Why don't you and Mica make a blog out of that?". "Maybe," I replied. At that time Mica and I didn't think much of it. But then a couple of weeks after June 4, something happened and I told Mica we should go ahead and do it.

The church wedding that my mother wanted us to do, used to be a sensitive topic. My husband and I actually felt hurt knowing that my parents couldn't accept our Boracay wedding as a real wedding just because it wasn't in a church. We thought this was pretty absurd. The church wedding was actually my mom's wedding. I got frustrated at first but then I realized that I was not a child that can just be 'dealt with'. So instead of moping, I quickly turned this around and positivized it--I created a theme, and I was to have a brunch with my friends 5 hours before the wedding.

 So in celebration of our brunch/church wedding's 2-year anniversary, I would like to formally blog about it here in RB, and share some of the rebellious ideas we did on that day.
The Brunch

"We get by with a little help from our friends"--they were our sources of happiness and positive vibes so we wanted to capture this moment in a video that we collaborated with Ian Cruz Films. After Ian shared this video, a lot of his couples asked him if it would be possible to do the same on their wedding day. While this is a great idea, keep in mind that we really prepped for the brunch. It means you'll also have to adjust your schedules to squeeze it in. 
The Portraits

When we first met w/ J Lucas Reyes and explained to him about the brunch, he shared with us a story of his Australian couple who wanted their loved ones to be individually photographed during their wedding because it was tradition. We loved this idea so we thought of doing the same for our friends. Souvenir gifts are fleeting---if you can actually share the limelight w/ your loved ones and have them photographed as well, this is a wonderful gift that would be treasured forever.

Vanessa + Gerard's Mango Farm Wedding

It's always exciting when the artists from our Rebellious Bunch List has a new set. And J Lucas Reyes is no exception to that. When you have a wedding in an enchanting place such as Mango Farm, there really is no need to create a theme because that's already your theme right there.  

 Nature is the most wonderful backdrop in the world. But most people are too distracted with shiny, fancy things that we often forget about the organic goodness that surround us. And it is because of this conformity that makes green advocates the rebellious ones.
 And so we celebrate Vanessa and Gerard for choosing to have a natural wedding such as theirs. And we equally applaud their awesome wedding team for executing it so perfectly.



J shares in his blog: "I’ve always thought I’d only see a laid back, magical garden ceremony somewhere in the hills of Napa Valley or Sonoma County, only to discover one unfolding here right in the middle of the hills of Antipolo."

Joed & Franz' Ranch+Beach Prenup

With prenups and weddings popularly being styled up to the most miniscule of details, ironically sometimes being rebellious is going for the more organic approach. Just like in Joed & Franz' prenup, their natural surroundings were so beautiful already that there was really no need to overly style it. Backed up with an amazing team, their prenup exuded taste and style that almost looked innate as opposed to overt.

Jo shares: "Not sure if this is rebellious enough, but  I just know that we wanted no props as much as possible and no picnic set-up. As a result aside from the clothes and ourselves, our only props were the horses in the shoot and the wonderful head wreath by Dylan of Vatel Manila. It was also raining cats and dogs when we were doing this shoot but J Lucas Reyes (photographer) didn't want the usual rain/wet shots because most photos that he was already seeing lately are full of this. So it was a challenge for him to maximize our dry areas. We were also thankful that towards the end, we were blessed with some golden sun! It was only 30 mins. of fast-paced photography but the results were magnificent."

The bride's sister created a behind-the-scene video for them and I think that's really sweet. And for that, it will be the main highlight of this feature. Enjoy! :)

Our dear rebellious brides, when it comes to styling your entourage, please don't fall into the same mistakes as previous brides have done in the past.

The truth is, friends and family just love you so much that even if they don't feel confident and comfortable wearing the gown you have chosen for them, they just don't tell you (at least not to your face). They simply don't want to hurt you even if their own egos and confidence are getting hurt.

Even if you are the bride and it's your special day to shine, make your entourage happy and pretty--don't make them feel fat, or ugly or broke.

We're not saying you are intentionally doing so--but you MIGHT be unknowingly doing it--especially when you are model-esque and look good in anything--well sister--not everyone does.

Here are some mishaps that have been shared with us via direct messages by previous entourage members, and later on we will provide some suggestions on how to style your entourage pretty.

1. Please don't choose unflattering styles. Thin, sexy brides fall into this trap all the time--they think everyone else has a rockin' body and would look fab in dresses that don't look exactly nice to some. Remember that some girls wanna accentuate while some girls want to hide a body part. Learn to put yourselves in your friends' shoe. REBEL X says: "How would YOU feel if you were forced to wear an empire cut gown that makes you look preggers?"

The Rebellious Couple with THREE Weddings

For those of you who visited the blog earlier this week, perhaps you've noticed that some of my blog posts are missing. I'll get to explain it (hopefully soon), but right now, I don't wanna jinx the exciting news so I'll zip my mouth shut for now.

So as a different spin on things, I've decided to create an article instead about having three weddings!

When people learn that I’ve already had three weddings (with the same groom of course!) in just a span of one year, the initial reaction is that I am one spoiled bride. I call it Rebellious. In truth, the reason why we’ve had three weddings is so we can accommodate and make everyone we love happy. But who am I to complain? A girl usually has only one chance to make a wedding right—and I’ve had the chance to play and experiment with my wedding ideas not twice but thrice! In the television show Sex and the City, there was one episode where Carrie Bradshaw couldn’t understand why she’s not excited when she got engaged. She said maybe she didn’t have a “bride gene”. I am probably the exact opposite of that. When it comes to “bride genes” – I was at the forefront when God was giving it away!

ROUND 1: The “Bora Hop” Wedding

Type of Wedding: Beachfront Sunset Civil Wedding

Fondly called as the “Bora Hop”, our Boracay wedding was literally a hop from one place to the next because we wanted our family and friends to experience the island, the same way we enjoy it. We started the festivities with breakfast at Real Coffee, spa at Mandala Spa, beachfront ceremony at The White House Station 1, cocktails at The Tides, dinner at True Food, and firedance show at Bamboo Lounge. Kate Spade pinwheels, baby blue parasols, armed with my gorgeous brooch bouquet, and Boracay as our backdrop, it was really the wedding of my dreams. Our wedding has been cited as one of award-winning videographer Jason Magbanua’s favorite weddings of 2011. He described the wedding as "brief, emotional, and powerful", while he described us as "imaginative". :)

ROUND 2: The Sunshine, Tea-Time, Hats and Pearls Wedding
Date: June 4, 2011
Venue: Manila
Type of Wedding: Catholic Ceremony

Being wed in the eyes of God was very important for my parents, and so the second wedding was essentially to fulfill this single wish from them. But even though this was already the second wedding, we still seized the opportunity to make it special as we possibly can. With yellow butterflies and flowers, balloons, chalk boards, a yellow bridal car, yellow head pieces galore, and everyone in their best yellow tea-time outfits, we created one pretty “yellow revolution!” J Lucas Reyes picked our second wedding as one of his most rebellious for 2011. My parents' friends also personally commended me and said that they enjoyed the wedding--and since this wedding was primarily for my parents, I'm glad that they had the wedding that they wanted and a wedding their friends could appreciate!

ROUND 3: The Elvis Vegas Wedding
Date: February 21, 2012
Venue: Las Vegas, USA
Type of Wedding: Ceremony by Elvis!

Even though my husband loved our other weddings, a part of him felt like something was missing. Having been raised in the US, most if not all of his best friends are from the States. My husband has been homesick and missing his friends for 11 years and due to the economy and other personal reasons, they were not able to attend in any of the two weddings. So for our first year anniversary (and for our long overdue honeymoon), we decided to fly to Las Vegas, get married the third time around, and cross out one of our Bucket List items to experience an Elvis wedding. And although this was a budget-challenged wedding, we still managed to squeeze in a lot of unique details from our own artwork, to cigars, wines, a new bouquet, some booties, and cheesy Vegas Elvis elements, it was all we could ever ask for! The wedding made my husband very happy--and that's what really mattered. There was a moment when we were able to intimately have a "candle pass" (aka open forum) with his friends, sharing their feelings about seeing Cy again after 11 years, and Cy introducing me to his group. I couldn't believe my eyes that MEN were opening up like that. It was a whole other level of brotherhood and I am so grateful to have been part of it. Elvis-wise, The King was just as we expected him and SO MUCH MORE! Viva Las Vegas!

Rebellious Weddings of 2011

The so-called "Best Weddings of 2011" is just a disguise for "Best CELEBRITY Weddings and Best Weddings w/ High-Profiled Surnames of 2011".  It's like high school all-over again. Sorry. You're just not popular enough to be the Prom King and Queen. And Sorry--you're just not royalty or a Kardashian so we don't think the Pixel Cowboy Wedding featured at Green Wedding Shoes is "best of 2011" material (notice the International references so as not to step on the local scene but we all know that this happens in our country damn too much).

So much like our own Wedding Forecast of 2012 which we made on our own, we're also listing down our own most Rebellious Weddings of 2011. How many weddings have you attended in 2011? Out of all those weddings, how many were creative/unique/rebellious? Our intention here is not to boast or to create a popularity poll. Our intention here is simply to encourage and inspire other brides to take the road less traveled. We've created various categories here as well. In some categories, you'll see past Rebellious Brides we have featured, some ideas from our own weddings as well, and from new Rebellious Brides/Weddings that we are just about to feature--again, the intention is not to boast, but to inspire so you can grab ideas---note however that we don't condone "copycats"---what we would like is for you to get inspired by the ideas so that you can make it your own. Upon the request of the bride, photos of their wedding are not allowed to be publicized, but according to the designer, her bride had a beach wedding, and it was the first time that she was commissioned to do maillot swimsuits for the entourage and the bride! How rebellious, fun, and fearless is that!

Dylan Gozum of Vatel agrees with J Lucas Reyes and says: "I think Rissa Mananquil's wedding to Paolo Trillo was rebellious in a way that both of them were very into the whole wedding preps, both of them had a very clear vision of how they wanted their wedding to be, and that they insisted - every step of the way - to have things done according to reflect their personalities. :-)"
