The Lucky Ones

Planning a wedding is challenging as it is. What more when you feel like you have to tiptoe your way around superstitions and traditions that don't even make sense to you.

So at the end of the day, Maribonn and Reuel decided to just loosen up a bit, have fun creating their wedding their way, and just run away with it. 

The couple had their engagement session at Henry Hotel -- one of our most favorite hotels in Manila for sure. Then for the wedding they incorporated these creative, thoughtful, little details that spoke so much of their aesthetics, and then for their post-wedding session they did it in Chicago where they are based, to tie everything together.

Chocolate, Strawberries, and Champagne

To some extent, you can say that Niña is the honorary co-founder of Rebellious Brides because it was actually her idea for me and Mica to start a blog out of "Rebellious Brides" some 4 years ago.

And not only that, she and her husband Mikki made a lot of firsts in the wedding scene even before Mica and I got engaged and got married to our husbands ourselves. They were the firsts to have a creative wedding in our group of friends, they were one of the first real-life couples to have been picked by Wedding Essentials to be on their cover,  and they were one of the firsts to be featured by Bridal Book as well.

Niña and Mikki's Chocolate, Strawberries, and Champagne wedding is the definitive proof that elegance and rebelliousness can co-exist in a seamless way. While their wedding respected a lot of traditions, they planned it with a lot of twists.

First of all, they did their wedding their way--no influences from friends and family. Secondly, the look and feel of their wedding were also quite unique. They used more than the usual wedding combinations opting for mixes of browns, reds, whites, and lace instead. The bride, while wearing a white gown opted for a more structured but feminine style--a "White w/ a Twist" creation by Ivarluski Aseron who is more known as a fashion/artistic designer rather than a bridal designer.  Food was also one of the main focal points of the theme--with overflowing desserts, cocktails, mouthwatering dishes, and finished off with a chocolate tower instead of a wedding cake adding to the organic essence of the entire celebration.

Third, the wedding was also a musical feast with the bride entering the church to the song "Kissing" by Bliss (not your usual bridal entrance song), Spanish guitars, transcending to sounds of house music as DJ-ed by the bride's Maid-of-Honor for the after party.

Niña and Mikki's wedding was such a bespoke, very personal, and memorable day. Truly one for the books--and already rebellious even before we invented that term.

Rebellious Bride Jo's Style

It's been awhile since we last featured a rebel bride and just zeroed in on her wedding style. It's a rare feature and not something that we just easily celebrate. So we are delighted to find a stylish rebel bride in Jo. 


From Jo's prenup to her wedding, she exuded a style that's both spunky and romantic. Sure, she had an amazing team that worked with her but from how she shared with us her creative process, it was clear that she had a voice, an input, and a collaborative spirit.

 As Jo explained to us, fashion and travel were two of her favorite loves which clearly resonated all throughout her engagement and marriage to Feli.

When RB Mica blogged about Vera Wang's Red Bridal Collection, we have since been hoping that a real bride would have the guts to wear one. And here we are at last. When photographer extraordinaire Pat Dy shared this on Instagram, we knew we had to have this on the blog. But it's not just the bridal gown that was on fire, really. It was in the couple's embraces, their stolen moments, and in their wickedly New York wedding.

Joanne and Richard - Beyond the Smokes and Mirrors

 Just one look at Joanne and Richard's engagement sessions and you'll probably get to the same conclusion as us that this is one glamorous, beautiful couple. But what we particularly admired the most was the email we received from Joanne (which was sent to us in confidence so we'll keep the finer details in private). 

 How seemingly easy enough it was that Richard summoned the courage to walk up to her in a restaurant to introduce himself. How this simple introduction lead to a challenging relationship which they rebelliously tried to deflect. How the very concepts of their prenups intentionally left out the usual grand props to give focus more on lived-in locations with the most interesting of tiles, walls, columns, and available props. No. this prenup, and this very love story go beyond the smokes and mirrors. Joanne and Richard aren't the poster couple for being rebellious in the obvious of definitions but they are rebellious in how they feel and think. And beyond the smokes and mirrors, they are rebellious in their resilient spirits. 

Joanne writes: Basically, we wanted to be "uniquely rebellious" without totally being out of character.  We were being rebellious by avoiding the norm - out of town location (with wide shots where the face of the couple can no longer be seen), sexy shoots, and artsy photoshoot that most couples do nowadays.  We did a lot of research and found this old house in Manila that was turned into a gallery.  We did not make use of additional props because the place was already full of different furniture, plates, bed frames, etc.  Pat Dy (our talented photographer), known for making wedding editorial shoots, really made use of the natural lighting and elements.  It just looked like we were taking photos in our own "vintage" home.   Even without nature in our midst, he gave us photos we can look at with pride 10 years down the line.

When Rebellious Bride Reader Agnes emailed us, she said that she believed that simplicity was the ultimate sophistication. She also enumerated the reasons why she believes she is a rebellious bride, with a 'pahabol' note that says "...and hopefully you would consider [me an RB too] as I try to convince you hehe"

The Ultimate Run for Love

My, how time flies by so fast. Just last year, we cited Coach Rio's proposal video as a trend to watch out for in 2012 (Back track HERE). And here we are today, ogling his and Nicole's heart-stopping Mayad trailer & wedding video.

We don't personally know Coach Rio and Nicole (my mom does though--which is soooo weird!). But Coach being one of the country's 'pambansang' icons when it comes to all things running/marathons, we feel happy for him & his equally athletic 'n awesome wife as if we were one of the bystanders rooting for the lovers to finally finish the race.

Separately, Mayad (with the direction of Raphael Jamil Pranga) culminated the couple's running journey  through a thematic wedding video. What's so rebellious about their wedding besides Coach Rio's usual rebellious hair? Well, watch out how the couple exits the church and the bride's sizzling preps! We are also loving Nicole's rogue lips! Another sign that our fearless 2013 forecast is on the right track :)

Rebellious Bride Ronna Creates Her Own Rules

"My wedding may not be as rebellious as some, but I challenged Filipino traditions because I didn't see the point :) I also did what worked for us, rather than fitting ourselves into customary practices.... A Rebellious Bride knows who she is and is unafraid of being herself. She is ready to break or bend rules and challenge norms, not just for the sake of it, but because she is secure in and asserts her own identity. Her style follows from her personality, and she is comfortable to have only 50% of the decision-making weight. :)"

As Ronna put it, her wedding may not be defined or considered by others to be of the rebel kind. But in our books, it's got our own rebellious seal of approval. We've said this before and we'll say it again--having a rebellious wedding doesn't mean taking it literally with all the Chuch Taylors in this world and downright crazy prenups. Sometimes, rebellious weddings are of the sophisticated, elegant kind and what makes it rebellious is in the subtle style or in the couple's thinking.

What makes Ronna rebellious is that she knew how to create her own wedding rules--she had an inquisitive mind. For instance, she refused to label her wedding into any kind of wedding concept, theme or motif. Instead, she wanted to go for THE WEDDING FEELING.

Rebellious Idea - Damask Wedding

I don't know what it is about the holidays that make me gravitate towards damask details. I loooove damask patterns! I can stare at a damask wallpaper for HOURS and just get lost in my own swirling thoughts. In our own wedding, we were able to incorporate damask details through our prints, our font, and in our wed-site. But if I had a "December in the City" type of wedding, I would probably go for an all-out damask wedding. There are different ways to create a wedding made out of damask. But if it were a REBELLIOUS damask wedding, here are two mood boards I created for you:


Damask Boldly

 I call this mood board "damask boldly" because it is all about putting damask details in things that you wouldn't normally see this pattern on. Think "damasking" the bustier of a bridal gown, or an irreverent damask/skull pendant, or damask cookies! It's all about creating an element of surprise since damask is already very visually obvious--think damask-printed envelopes instead of the usual damask-invitation. Or think damask photobooth props, instead of the usual damask photobooth backdrop!

 I call this mood board "damask colorfully" because when you think of damask, instantly you think of rich, opulent textures that are usually in the darker shades. But damasks can also be playful and quirky! Think mixing and matching Damask with the preppy look for your entourage! Or a festive damask print! Or a bouquet with a charming damask touch. Other quirky details may also include clashing a damask print with stripes, or a white bridal gown with a damask belt or damask pumps! 



Hasmin & Miguel by Rebellious Bunch - Pat Dy


Here's an awesome real-life damask wedding taken from Rebellious Bunch - Pat Dy's blog. Miggy & Hasmin literally incorporated their damask detail into everything. The result is a classy wedding with an attitude. Everything was in black and white but together, it looked bold, modern, and chic. The best detail however, was the bride's gown itself. This couple definitely didn't half-ass their theme---they just really followed it through!

Bridal cars are one of the most awesome ways you can personalize and create a rebellious twist to your weddings.

Gone are the days of the usual carriages, vintage cars, or traditional luxury rides the likes of a Benz or a BMW. Of course there's nothing wrong with these classic choices if that's really your personality--but if you are only doing it for the status quo or because that's what your parents would approve of--then drop it. Drop it now, and drop it gewd. Because baby, there are so many other rebellious and creative rides you can go for.

How about a bridal ride that gives off an "elopement" wedding vibe? Like you were just swept off of your feet and you are riding off to the sunset with your bad boy? =P

Rebellious Fashionista Brides

We love brides who are rebellious enough to make their most special day, their greatest fashion moment ever. What's more, we applaud brides who are rebellious enough to break out of the usual princess bridal gown and instead would go for multiple looks. After all, a rebellious bride creates her own rules. So if she wants to wear more than one bridal ensemble or just one bridal gown that is absolutely unpredictable and totally out of this world, she just simply won't give a damn. So presenting the Rebellious Fashionista Brides--brides who have realized that they crave for more than the usual bridal gown/sssssss.

Fun Wedding Playlist Ideas

No two brides are ever alike. Much less FOUR? Our little group for instance, has four ex-brides who can't be any different. Our friends Nina Tanchanco-Cuenca and Anna Montenegro-Antonino were obviously the sophisticated, elegant, chic brides. Mica and I on the other hand, are just plain TOPAK. Haha! But no matter how extreme our weddings all were, we DID manage to agree on one thing--and that was to have rebellious wedding music. 

Gone are the days of super duper formal, traditional wedding music. 

Your "wedding soundtrack" is a great way to personalize and pump up your big day. If you are even afraid to incorporate anything rebellious in your wedding, this would be the best way to channel it.

Since our little group represents virtually four types of brides, you are sure to pick up an idea or two with the music we each decided on to be part of our weddings :)

Create a theme around your music

 Even her wedding music had a theme on its own--she called it "Kisses". So it first started with a rendition of "Kissing" by Bliss which transitioned to Desiree's "Kissing You" for the bridal walk. Nina says: "I chose the song Kissing simply because it sounded blissful. The bridal song is one of our favorite songs since Romeo+Juliet is one of our favorite movies. I surprised Mix with this bridal song :)"

had a "Peach & Birdcage" wedding theme. 

For their couple's entrance, she chose "Married Life" from the Pixar animation movie, "UP!". Apart from the fact that the song was perfectly titled "Married Life", Anna also opted for the song because she liked the kind of marriage Mr. Fredrickson and his wife Ely had. "And to have the UP Jazz Ensemble, with its 21-piece orchestra play it for me live was really cool for me", Anna adds.

Boracay Weddings Decoded

"Karym and I are planning to have a beach wedding (preferably Boracay since that place holds a special spot in our hearts). But we don't know where to start (I guess like all other newly engaged out there... ;)

Is it okay if I/we talk to you about how you made your wedding happen? Nahihilo ako just thinking about the things we need to figure out: wedding reception, entourage, wedding coordinator, caterer, flowers, music..and though I've worked in Bora, I don't know the local wedding businesses there :D We would appreciate any help...thank you!"

"Life's a Beach in Boracay" by Wedding Guide Asia
Once in a while, I get questions on how to plan a wedding in Boracay. And although I don't claim to be an expert (because the real Boracay expert and Boracay Queen is Amanda Tirol), my dream was always to have a wedding in Boracay. I make it a point to go to the island at least once a year because I am just so in love with it! And if there's one thing I can advice to future Boracay brides-- advice from family, friends, wedding resources are aplenty--but with Boracay being Boracay, if there are people who can really understand and help you, it's ex-Bora brides who have gone through what you are about to go through.

So here are some of the things that I have "decoded" about planning a Boracay wedding. While most of these ideas come from my own wedding, most of the ones I will share here are also things that I learned along the way, which I hoped I knew before. So here goes!

All in the Props

This blog is about going against the norm, right? Here's one of the thoughts that's been bugging me right now, and I don't mean to offend anyone when I say this. But sometimes, I really get overwhelmed by the overly decorated reception table ideas. To think the cost to hire an event stylist nowadays can go as high as six figures? It's such a waste of money knowing it will all go to things you won't use after the ceremony. I know this is the "in" thing right now, and sometimes this is the way traditional brides try to show that they have a rebellious side. But really, I don't see anything rebellious about it. Sometimes, it's all in the simple touches and details, that make a traditional wedding look unique and personal. Take for example Andrew & Coral's wedding, which looks very traditional and classic, but because of their props, and their unique details, even this traditional wedding looked pretty rebellious.
